About BMW XM
The BMW XM is a large luxury performance SUV developed exclusively by BMW M. Introduced in 2022 and reaching customers in 2023, it was the division’s first standalone model since the BMW M1. Unlike M versions derived from regular BMW vehicles, the XM has no direct non-M counterpart. It also introduced BMW M’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The XM occupies a distinctive flagship position above BMW’s conventional performance SUVs. Its focus combines high output and all-wheel-drive capability with a spacious five-seat cabin, premium materials and bold styling. The model is particularly known for its imposing proportions, large illuminated kidney grille, sculpted bodywork and unusually expressive interior design.
Only one generation, known internally as G09, has been produced. The range has included the V8-powered XM, the more powerful XM Label Red—later named XM Label—and the XM 50e offered in selected markets with an inline-six engine. All use plug-in hybrid technology, although performance and electric range differ by version. The XM Label is the most powerful series-production BMW M model.
Production takes place at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, United States, alongside other BMW X models. The XM serves as a low-volume, high-end showcase for electrified M performance rather than a mainstream member of the SUV range.
