About BMW X5 M
The BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the BMW X5, a large luxury SUV that BMW describes as a Sports Activity Vehicle. Introduced in 2009, it brought BMW M engineering to the X range and became the division’s first production model with both turbocharging and all-wheel drive.
Three generations have been produced: the E70, launched in 2009; the F85, introduced for 2015; and the F95, which reached the market in 2020. All use twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, automatic transmissions and M-tuned all-wheel-drive systems. Standard and higher-output Competition versions have been offered, depending on generation and market. Since the 2024 model update, the X5 M has been sold globally in Competition form with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.
The model is built alongside other BMW X vehicles at the company’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. It sits above regular X5 variants and M Performance versions such as the X5 M60i, combining substantially revised powertrain, suspension, braking and cooling systems.
The X5 M is known for delivering sports-car-level acceleration and handling in a practical five-seat SUV body. Its appeal lies in the combination of strong V8 performance, all-weather traction, long-distance comfort, a spacious cabin and useful luggage capacity. Within BMW M’s range, it is positioned as a high-performance alternative for drivers who need more space and versatility than an M saloon or coupé provides.
