About BMW X4
The BMW X4 is a five-door premium mid-size crossover with a coupé-style roofline. Introduced in 2014, it applied the Sports Activity Coupé concept of the larger X6 to the X3 class. The X4 shares much of its engineering with the X3 but uses lower, more expressive bodywork to provide a sportier alternative within BMW’s X range.
Two generations were produced. The first-generation F26 was built from 2014 to 2018, followed by the larger and more refined G02 generation from 2018. Production took place at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina for global markets and ended in November 2025.
Depending on market and model year, the range included turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Most versions combined an eight-speed automatic transmission with BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. Regular models were joined by M Performance variants such as the M40i and M40d, while the X4 M and X4 M Competition brought dedicated high-performance engines, chassis tuning and braking systems.
The X4 is known for combining an elevated driving position and practical hatchback access with responsive handling and a distinctive fastback profile. Compared with the X3, its sloping roof can reduce rear headroom, cargo flexibility and rearward visibility.
