About BMW X1
The BMW X1 is a premium compact crossover and the smallest SUV-style model in BMW’s X range. Introduced in 2009, it brought the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicle concept into a city-friendly size. It sits below the X3, combining a raised driving position and practical five-door body with a road-focused character.
Three generations have been produced. The first-generation E84 used a longitudinal-engine layout and offered rear- or all-wheel drive, depending on the version. The second-generation F48 arrived in 2015 with a transverse-engine platform, front-wheel-drive-based packaging and increased cabin space. The third-generation U11 entered the market in 2022 with larger dimensions, a more digital interior and wider powertrain choice.
Depending on market and model year, the X1 has been available with petrol and diesel engines, sDrive two-wheel drive, xDrive all-wheel drive and plug-in hybrid systems. The current generation also underpins the fully electric BMW iX1, while the X1 M35i xDrive is the performance-focused version in selected markets. German production began at Leipzig and later moved to Regensburg, where multiple powertrain types are built on the same line.
The X1 is known for combining compact exterior dimensions with flexible interior space, everyday comfort and responsive handling. It serves as an entry point to the BMW X family for buyers seeking premium features and crossover practicality without moving to a larger SUV.
