About BMW M5

The BMW M5 is the high-performance flagship of the 5 Series executive-car range. Developed by BMW M, it combines sports-car pace and handling with four-door practicality, comfort and relatively restrained styling. The first M5, based on the E28 5 Series, appeared in 1985 and helped establish the modern high-performance executive saloon category.

Seven generations have followed: E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, F90 and G90. Their engines reflect changing performance technology, progressing from naturally aspirated inline-six units to V8 and V10 power, then turbocharged V8s. The F90 introduced M xDrive all-wheel drive, while the seventh generation adopted a plug-in hybrid system combining a twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor.

Most M5 generations were primarily offered as saloons, although Touring estate versions were produced in the E34 and E61 eras and returned with the current generation. Competition and CS derivatives have provided sharper, more powerful variations in selected periods. Known for strong acceleration, long-distance ability and a balance between everyday refinement and precise dynamics, the M5 occupies a central position in BMW M’s range and remains a benchmark among high-performance executive cars.
