About BMW M3
The BMW M3 is the high-performance model derived from the 3 Series and developed by BMW M. Introduced in 1986, the original E30 was created as a road-going homologation model for touring-car racing. It established the formula that still defines the M3: compact executive-car practicality combined with extensively revised engines, chassis, brakes, aerodynamics and body components.
Across six generations — E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, F80 and G80 — the M3 has appeared as a two-door model, four-door sedan, convertible and, in selected markets, Touring estate. Its engines have ranged from the E30’s four-cylinder unit to naturally aspirated inline-six and V8 designs, followed by turbocharged inline-six power. Since the F80 generation, the M3 name has mainly identified four-door models, while related coupé and convertible versions have been sold as the M4.
Within BMW’s range, the M3 sits above regular 3 Series and M Performance variants as a full BMW M model. Depending on generation and market, notable versions include Competition, Evolution, CSL, GTS and CS editions, with rear- or all-wheel drive offered in current variants. The model is particularly known for precise handling, strong performance, motorsport links and its ability to combine track capability with everyday use.
