About BMW M2
The BMW M2 is a compact two-door high-performance coupé developed by BMW M from the 2 Series. Introduced in 2015 and launched for 2016, it became the smallest full M car and a successor in spirit to the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. It sits below the M4 in size, with a more focused chassis and powertrain than regular 2 Series models.
The first generation, known as F87, was produced in Leipzig from 2015 to 2021. It paired a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with rear-wheel drive, offering manual or dual-clutch transmissions depending on version and market. The original M2 was followed by the more powerful M2 Competition and the limited-production M2 CS, which added weight-saving measures and sharper chassis tuning.
The second-generation G87 entered production in Mexico in late 2022 and reached global markets in 2023. It retained an inline-six engine, rear-wheel drive and an available manual gearbox, while adopting newer technology and a larger, wider body. The range later added another limited M2 CS and, for 2026, the first M2 with M xDrive all-wheel drive. Known for strong performance, compact proportions, balanced handling and a driver-oriented character, the M2 serves as the entry point to BMW’s core high-performance coupé range.
