About BMW M1

The BMW M1 is a two-seat, mid-engined sports car produced from 1978 to 1981. Known internally as the E26, it was the first model developed entirely by BMW Motorsport GmbH, now BMW M. Created with competition use and Group 4 homologation in mind, it became a road-going flagship that stood apart from BMW’s saloons and coupés.

Its low, wedge-shaped body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, combining Italian styling with BMW engineering. The road version used a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-six engine producing 277 hp, mounted behind the passenger compartment. A lightweight structure, balanced layout and direct handling gave the M1 a strong connection to its racing purpose.

The M1 remained a single-generation model with no direct replacement under the same name. Fewer than 500 examples were built, including road cars and competition variants. The best-known racing version is the M1 Procar, developed for the one-make series held alongside European Formula One events in 1979 and 1980. Other cars were prepared for Group 4 and Group 5 competition.

As BMW M’s only series-production mid-engined sports car, the M1 occupies a unique position in the brand’s range. It is particularly noted for its rarity, hand-built production, distinctive design and influence on later BMW M engines and performance models.
