About BMW i8
The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed under the BMW i sub-brand. Produced at BMW’s Leipzig plant from 2014 to 2020, it was the BMW Group’s first production plug-in hybrid and served as a technology-focused flagship alongside the electric i3. Its low, futuristic shape closely reflected the earlier Vision EfficientDynamics concept.
The i8 remained within one model generation. It was introduced as a 2+2-seat Coupé, known internally as the I12, while the two-seat I15 Roadster joined the range in 2018 alongside an updated Coupé. The later models received a larger battery, greater electric-motor output and increased combined system power.
All versions paired a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear wheels with an electric motor powering the front axle. This arrangement provided hybrid-specific all-wheel drive and allowed limited electric-only operation. Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic was used for the passenger cell, supported by an aluminium structure housing the powertrain and chassis components.
The i8 occupied a distinctive position between a grand-touring sports car, an electrified technology demonstrator and a brand halo model rather than a conventional BMW M car. It is particularly known for its dihedral doors, aerodynamic body, lightweight construction and unusual combination of sports-car performance with plug-in hybrid efficiency.
