About BMW i5
The BMW i5 is the fully electric member of the BMW 5 Series range, positioned in the premium executive car segment between the smaller i4 and flagship i7. It made its market debut in October 2023 as part of the eighth-generation 5 Series, bringing battery-electric power to the model line for the first time.
The i5 shares its core architecture with other current 5 Series models and is built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany. It was introduced first as a four-door saloon, followed in 2024 by the i5 Touring estate in selected markets. The i5 remains in its first generation, corresponding to the G60 saloon and G61 Touring branches of the wider 5 Series family.
Versions vary by country, but the range has included the rear-wheel-drive i5 eDrive40, the dual-motor i5 xDrive40 with all-wheel drive, and the higher-performance i5 M60 xDrive. Touring versions broadly mirror these choices where offered. This spread covers efficiency-focused, all-weather and performance-oriented roles.
Within BMW’s line-up, the i5 serves as an electric alternative to a conventional executive saloon or estate. It is known for combining a spacious, refined cabin and long-distance comfort with responsive electric performance, modern driver-assistance systems and a highly digital interior.
