About BMW i4
The BMW i4 is a battery-electric premium midsize car with a four-door Gran Coupé body. Introduced in 2021, it brought electric power into the core of BMW’s range, combining coupé-style proportions and frameless windows with five seats and a large liftback. It is closely related in format and production context to the 4 Series Gran Coupé and is built at BMW’s Munich plant.
The i4 remains in its first generation, identified by the G26 model code. A design and technology update entered production in July 2024, revising the exterior, interior controls and infotainment without creating a new generation. Depending on market and model year, versions have included the rear-wheel-drive eDrive35 and eDrive40, the all-wheel-drive xDrive40, and M-developed performance models. The i4 M50 was BMW M’s first fully electric performance car; in some markets it was later replaced by the more powerful i4 M60.
Within BMW’s electric line-up, the i4 sits below the larger i5 and offers a lower, more road-focused alternative to electric SUVs. It is known for balancing responsive handling, quiet performance and long-distance ability with everyday practicality.
