About BMW i3
The BMW i3 name spans two distinct interpretations of a compact premium electric car. The original i3, produced in Leipzig from 2013 to 2022, was a purpose-built five-door urban hatchback and BMW’s first mass-produced battery-electric model. Its tall, short body, rear-mounted motor, rear-wheel drive and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic passenger cell set it apart from conventional BMWs.
This first-generation i3 was offered as a pure electric vehicle and, in some markets, with a small petrol range extender that generated electricity. Battery capacity increased through several updates, while the i3s added more power, a wider stance and sportier chassis tuning. More than 250,000 examples were built, giving the model an important position as an early premium EV and a technology pioneer for the BMW i sub-brand.
The i3 name later moved to electric sports sedans. A China-only long-wheelbase version based on the 3 Series arrived in 2022, with eDrive35L and eDrive40L variants and local production in Shenyang.
In 2026, BMW introduced a new global i3 sedan on its Neue Klasse architecture, built in Munich and positioned as the electric counterpart to the 3 Series. Across its forms, the i3 is known for efficient electric propulsion, distinctive engineering and its role in bringing electric mobility into BMW’s core range.
