About BMW 4 Series
BMW introduced the 4 Series in 2013 as the sportier, more design-focused relative of the 3 Series. It replaced the 3 Series Coupé and established a separate premium midsize model line positioned below BMW’s larger luxury coupés. Two generations have been produced under the 4 Series name, with the second arriving from 2020 and receiving design and technology updates in 2024.
The range includes the two-door Coupé, the open-top Convertible and the Gran Coupé, which combines four frameless doors with a large rear hatch. The first generation used a retractable hardtop for the Convertible, while the second adopted a fabric roof. Depending on market and model year, versions have included four- and six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines, rear- or all-wheel drive, and higher-performance M440i variants.
The 4 Series is known for its low roofline, long bonnet, driver-focused cabin and handling-oriented character. The Coupé emphasises traditional grand-touring proportions, the Convertible adds open-air driving, and the Gran Coupé provides greater passenger access and luggage flexibility. Current Coupé and Convertible production is based at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, while the Gran Coupé is built in Munich.
