About BMW 3 Series
The BMW 3 Series is a premium midsize car introduced in 1975 as the successor to the BMW 02 Series. It has developed through seven generations and remains one of BMW’s central model lines, positioned below the larger 5 Series. Its main competitors come from other premium brands in the compact executive class.
The range is best known for combining responsive handling, a driver-focused cabin and everyday usability. Most generations have used a front-engine layout with rear-wheel drive, while many later versions also offer BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. Petrol and diesel engines have been widely available, with plug-in hybrid technology joining the range in more recent generations. Specifications and powertrain choices vary by country.
Body styles have changed considerably over time. The 3 Series has included two-door and four-door saloons, Touring estates, coupés, convertibles, Compact hatchbacks and the Gran Turismo. From the sixth generation, BMW moved the regular coupé and convertible models into the separate 4 Series range, leaving the Saloon and Touring as the principal 3 Series formats.
The M3 is the high-performance variation and has played an important role in the model’s sporting reputation. Other versions range from efficiency-focused models to powerful M Performance derivatives. Current production serves major global markets from BMW plants in Germany, Mexico and China.
