About BMW 2 Series
The BMW 2 Series was introduced in 2014 as the successor to the 1 Series Coupe. Positioned below the 4 Series, it is best known as BMW’s compact sports coupe, combining relatively small dimensions with rear-wheel-drive-based engineering. The second-generation Coupe entered production in 2021 and is manufactured in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, for global markets.
The 2 Series name covers several distinct compact vehicles rather than a single body style. The first generation included Coupe and Convertible versions, alongside the high-performance M2. The current Coupe family offers four- and six-cylinder engines, with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive depending on the version. The M2 remains the most focused BMW M model based on this platform.
Separately, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door, front-wheel-drive-based model and is now in its second generation. In selected markets, the name also applies to the taller Active Tourer, a practical compact model available with combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The longer, seven-seat Gran Tourer was limited to the first generation. Across these variations, the 2 Series occupies the premium compact class, balancing everyday usability and modern technology with a stronger emphasis on agility than BMW’s larger models.
