About Bentley Continental R
The Bentley Continental R is a large two-door luxury grand tourer introduced at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show and built at Crewe until 2003. Developed during Bentley’s revival under Vickers, it was the brand’s first production model in decades with bodywork not shared with a Rolls-Royce. It helped reinforce Bentley’s identity as a maker of high-performance luxury cars.
A turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 and automatic transmission gave the Continental R strong performance for its size. Its four-seat coupé layout, long bonnet and broad proportions were matched by a quiet ride, a richly finished cabin and an emphasis on rapid, comfortable long-distance travel. At launch, it was Bentley’s fastest and most powerful model and occupied the highest level of the luxury-car market.
The range received several updates and derivatives. The rare Continental S was a higher-performance variation with charge-cooled turbocharging. The Continental SC featured removable roof panels. The Azure convertible was also based on the Continental R. Later Mulliner and limited-edition versions added further performance and bespoke details. The model is known for its low-volume character, muscular turbocharged power, imposing styling and blend of traditional craftsmanship with 1990s grand-touring ability.
