About Bentley Continental
The Bentley Continental produced from 1984 to 1995 is best understood as the renamed continuation of the Bentley Corniche introduced in 1971, rather than an entirely separate model. Its design originated with the Mulliner Park Ward two-door T-Series of the 1960s. Under the Continental name, it was a two-door, four-seat convertible positioned as Bentley’s open luxury grand tourer and counterpart to the Rolls-Royce Corniche.
Built when Bentley and Rolls-Royce shared engineering and production resources, the Continental used a steel monocoque structure reinforced beneath the floor to compensate for the absence of a fixed roof. Its 6.75-litre V8 drove the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. Self-levelling suspension, generous dimensions and a carefully finished cabin reflected its focus on smooth, quiet long-distance travel rather than sports-car agility.
The earlier Corniche lineage included coupé and convertible body styles, while the 1984–1995 Continental was a convertible. It retained the established body shape while receiving detail and mechanical updates during production. Bentley records 421 examples, making it a low-volume but important model in the marque’s 1980s recovery. It sat apart from the more performance-focused Turbo R and Continental R, emphasising traditional coachbuilt luxury and relaxed open-air touring. Production ended in 1995, when the Azure assumed Bentley’s convertible role.
