About Audi R8
The Audi R8 was a mid-engined, two-seat sports car that served as Audi’s flagship performance model. Introduced in 2006 and produced until March 2024, it moved the brand into the supercar segment. Developed by Audi’s specialist performance division in cooperation with Lamborghini, the R8 was built largely by hand in Germany.
Two generations were produced. The first was initially offered with a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8, followed by a 5.2-litre V10. The second generation arrived in 2015 and used the V10 exclusively, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Lightweight construction and a low-mounted engine were central to both generations.
The range included fixed-roof Coupé and open-top Spyder body styles. Most versions featured quattro all-wheel drive, while later RWS and performance RWD models used rear-wheel drive. Notable limited editions included the R8 GT, R8 LMX and R8 V10 GT RWD.
Known for combining supercar performance with a relatively practical cabin and predictable handling, the R8 also had close technical links to Audi Sport’s customer racing programme. Its naturally aspirated engines, distinctive side blades and understated styling helped separate it from more overtly exotic rivals. Production ended after 45,949 cars, leaving the R8 as one of Audi’s most recognisable performance models.
