About Audi quattro

The Audi quattro is a high-performance sports coupé introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980. Produced until 1991, it combined a turbocharged five-cylinder engine with permanent all-wheel drive at a time when this layout was unusual in road-going performance cars. It is now often called the Ur-quattro, or original quattro, to distinguish the model from Audi’s wider quattro drivetrain range.

The car remained within one long-running generation, receiving several technical and styling updates. Early versions produced 200 PS, while the later quattro 20V used a four-valve engine with 220 PS. A self-locking Torsen centre differential replaced the original manually controlled arrangement during the production run. The main road-going variation was the rare Sport quattro, unveiled in 1983 with a shorter wheelbase, wider body and 306 PS engine. It also formed the basis for specialised Group B rally cars.

Positioned as a flagship sports model, the quattro helped Audi move further into the premium and performance markets. Its rally success established the advantages of all-wheel drive in competition, while the road car became known for strong traction, distinctive flared bodywork and capable all-weather performance. A total of 11,452 original quattro models were built, making it relatively scarce but highly influential within Audi’s line-up.
