About Audi Coupé
The Audi Coupé was a compact two-door sports coupé produced from 1980 until December 1995. Developed from the Audi 80 family, it combined a lower, more distinctive body with much of the engineering and everyday usability of Audi’s contemporary saloons. Its large rear hatch and folding rear seats also made it more practical than many traditional coupés.
Two principal generations were offered. The angular B2-based model arrived in 1980 and included four- and five-cylinder versions, with the Coupé GT among the best-known variants. A redesigned model based on B3-series Audi 80 and 90 technology entered production in 1988. It introduced smoother styling and was later updated alongside Audi’s wider mid-size range.
Depending on year and market, the Coupé was available with four-, five- or six-cylinder petrol engines. Most versions used front-wheel drive, while selected models featured Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system. Performance choices included the five-cylinder 20V and the turbocharged S2 Coupé, which served as the range flagship and helped establish Audi’s S performance badge.
The model occupied a sporting position above Audi’s regular family cars without becoming a purpose-built exotic. It is known for understated design, solid construction, useful interior space and the distinctive character of its five-cylinder engines. Today, quattro, 20V and S2 versions are particularly notable among enthusiasts.
