About Audi Cabriolet

The Audi Cabriolet is a four-seat, two-door convertible produced from 1991 to 2000. Known internally as the Typ 8G, it was developed from the engineering of the B3-generation Audi Coupé and related Audi 80. A prototype appeared in 1989, followed by the production model at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show.

Only one generation was offered. Its clean, restrained shape, fabric folding roof and lack of a fixed roll bar gave it a distinctive open profile. The reinforced body and windscreen structure were designed to maintain rigidity and occupant protection. Production began in Ingolstadt and moved to Karmann’s Rheine plant in late 1997.

The range opened with Audi’s 2.3-litre five-cylinder petrol engine. Depending on the market and model year, later versions used 1.8- and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, 2.6- and 2.8-litre V6 units, or a 1.9-litre TDI diesel. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, but series-production models were front-wheel drive rather than quattro. North American cars were sold with the 2.8-litre V6.

Positioned as Audi’s open-top model of the 1990s, the Cabriolet combined compact executive-car origins with relaxed touring ability. Its long production run extended beyond the Audi 80 era and bridged the gap to the later A4 Cabriolet. It remains recognised for understated styling, solid construction and an unusually broad engine range.
