About Audi A8
The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury saloon and the flagship passenger car in Audi’s range. Introduced in 1994 as the successor to the Audi V8, it established the brand in the top luxury class. Production has traditionally been centred in Neckarsulm, Germany. The original A8 was notable for its aluminium Audi Space Frame body, which helped distinguish it from more conventionally constructed rivals.
Four generations have been introduced. The current fourth-generation model, launched in 2017 and updated for the 2022 model year, combines formal saloon styling with a strong emphasis on digital technology, refinement and rear-seat comfort. The A8 is offered in standard- and long-wheelbase A8 L forms, although availability differs by market.
Powertrain choices across the model’s history have included petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and W12 engines. Most modern versions use Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. Important variations include the performance-focused S8, the electrified A8 TFSI e and the extended A8 L Horch developed for China.
