About Audi A1
The Audi A1 is a small premium hatchback introduced in 2010 as the entry point to Audi’s passenger-car range. Positioned below the A3, it combines supermini dimensions with styling, cabin materials and technology associated with larger Audi models. Its compact size makes it particularly suited to urban use, while its five-seat layout and hatchback practicality allow it to serve as an everyday car.
The first generation was offered as a three-door hatchback and as the five-door A1 Sportback. Depending on market and model year, the range included petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and the high-performance S1 with quattro all-wheel drive. Production took place in Brussels, Belgium.
Audi launched the second generation in 2018 exclusively as a five-door Sportback. Built in Martorell, Spain, it uses the Volkswagen Group’s MQB A0 platform and has a larger body, more passenger space and a more digital interior than its predecessor. The range also included the raised, crossover-inspired A1 citycarver, later renamed A1 allstreet.
The A1 is known for its distinctive design, compact footprint, broad personalisation options and premium positioning within the small-car class. It remains focused on efficient front-wheel-drive motoring rather than functioning as a smaller version of Audi’s larger performance or luxury models.
