About Audi 90
The Audi 90 was a compact executive sedan developed as a more powerful and better-equipped counterpart to the Audi 80. Introduced in Europe in 1984, it occupied the upper end of Audi’s compact model family, below the larger Audi 100. It combined premium trim, stronger engines and distinctive detailing in a four-door body.
Two main European generations were produced. The first was based on the facelifted B2 Audi 80, while the second adopted the more rounded B3 platform and body. The 90 name ended in Europe in 1991, when the updated B4 range was sold as the Audi 80. In the United States and Canada, B4 sedans retained the Audi 90 name through the 1995 model year before being succeeded by the A4.
Specifications varied by market and year, with both front-wheel drive and quattro all-wheel drive available. The model is particularly associated with Audi’s inline five-cylinder petrol engines, including 20-valve versions. Later North American cars used a 2.8-litre V6. Quattro and 20V variants provided a stronger performance focus.
The Audi 90 is known for restrained styling, a well-finished cabin, a longitudinal-engine layout and secure road manners. B3 models also reflected Audi’s increasing emphasis on aerodynamic design and galvanised body construction. The car represents an important stage in Audi’s move towards a more clearly defined premium range.
