About Audi 80
The Audi 80 was a compact executive car positioned below the larger Audi 100. Although the 80 name briefly appeared in Audi’s F103 range during the 1960s, the best-known standalone series debuted in 1972. It became an important volume model for Audi and established the B-series lineage later continued by the A4.
Four main generations were produced: B1, B2, B3 and B4. Most versions were two- or four-door saloons, while the final B4 generation also introduced the practical five-door Avant estate. Depending on generation and market, the range included petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, front-wheel drive and quattro all-wheel drive. Sportier variants included the early GT and GTE models, while equipment and engine choices overlapped with the more upscale Audi 90.
The Audi 80 is known for restrained styling, efficient packaging and solid construction. Early cars emphasised low weight and fuel economy, while later generations moved the model further towards Audi’s premium positioning. The aerodynamic, fully galvanised B3 was especially notable for corrosion protection and clean design. B4 production ended in 1994 for the saloon and 1995 for the Avant, after which the Audi A4 took its place in the lineup.
