About Audi 200
The Audi 200 was produced from 1979 to 1991 as a more luxurious and powerful counterpart to the Audi 100. Offered across two generations, known as C2 and C3, it occupied the upper end of Audi’s executive-car range and helped strengthen the brand’s move towards the premium market.
The first generation was a four-door saloon, while the C3 range also included the practical Avant estate. Most versions used Audi’s characteristic five-cylinder petrol engines, with naturally aspirated and turbocharged options. Depending on year and market, major variations included the 5E, 5T, Turbo, quattro and 20V. Front-wheel drive was standard on many models, while quattro all-wheel drive distinguished the more advanced performance versions. In North America, related C3 models were initially sold under the Audi 5000 name before the 200 badge was adopted.
The C3 Audi 200 is particularly known for its aerodynamic body, spacious cabin, understated appearance and strong long-distance performance. The 200 quattro 20V became the technical flagship, combining a 220 PS turbocharged five-cylinder engine with permanent all-wheel drive. The model also gained visibility through the Audi 200 quattro’s success in the 1988 Trans-Am series.
