About Audi 100

The Audi 100 was an upper-mid-size executive car that helped establish Audi in the premium market. Introduced in 1968, it gave the brand a modern, independent product line within the Volkswagen Group and was positioned above the smaller Audi 80. Four generations were produced under the C1, C2, C3 and C4 designations before the model was renamed Audi A6 in 1994.

The range centred on spacious front-wheel-drive sedans, with body styles varying by generation. Early versions included two-door and four-door sedans, as well as the distinctive Audi 100 Coupé S. Later ranges added the five-door Avant, initially shaped as a liftback and subsequently developed into a more conventional estate. Petrol and diesel engines were offered, including four-cylinder, five-cylinder and, in later cars, six-cylinder units. Quattro all-wheel drive was available on selected versions.

The Audi 100 is particularly associated with understated design, passenger comfort and technical development. The aerodynamically optimised C3 achieved a notably low drag coefficient for its period, while five-cylinder engines, TDI diesel technology and fully galvanised body construction became important features of the range. The more refined C4 moved closer to the modern Audi formula and formed the direct basis of the first A6.
