About Aston Martin V8
The Aston Martin V8 is a hand-built British grand tourer produced at Newport Pagnell from 1972 to 1989. It evolved from the DBS V8 introduced in 1969, gaining a revised single-headlamp front end and the simpler AM V8 (AMV8) name. Although commonly described as a coupe, Aston Martin also used the traditional “Saloon” term for its two-door, four-seat body.
Power came from Aston Martin’s 5.3-litre, four-cam V8. Early AM V8s retained Bosch mechanical fuel injection, while carburettors arrived in 1973; fuel injection returned on later standard models. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, with specifications evolving throughout production.
The core model combined muscular William Towns styling with a luxurious cabin and long-distance touring ability. Major variations included the open V8 Volante, the higher-performance V8 Vantage launched in 1977, the official Vantage Volante introduced in 1986 and limited Zagato-bodied versions. Later cars received detail, chassis and powertrain updates rather than a complete redesign.
Within Aston Martin’s range, the V8 served as a low-volume luxury flagship and, in Vantage form, its most performance-focused road car. It is known for strong torque, imposing proportions, traditional craftsmanship and exclusivity. Its character helped define Aston Martin through the 1970s and 1980s before the Virage generation replaced it.
