About Alfa Romeo S.Z.

The Alfa Romeo S.Z. is a limited-production two-seat sports coupé introduced at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Its name means Sprint Zagato, while the development programme was known as ES30, short for Experimental Sportscar 3.0 litre. The project brought together Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Zagato, with final assembly handled by Zagato near Milan.

The S.Z. used a modified version of the rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo 75 platform. Its front-mounted 3.0-litre V6 was paired with a five-speed rear transaxle, helping distribute weight between the axles. Composite exterior panels covered a steel structure, while specialised suspension, a limited-slip differential and wide tyres gave the car a strong handling focus.

Its low roof, high waistline and sharply geometric body made it one of Alfa Romeo’s most unconventional designs, earning it the informal “Il Mostro” nickname. Production cars were generally finished in Alfa red with a dark grey roof and natural-coloured leather interior.

A competition-oriented S.Z. Trofeo was developed for a one-make racing series. The related open-top R.Z. followed in 1992, but was marketed as a separate model. With 1,036 S.Z. coupés produced, the car occupied a rare, high-priced position above Alfa Romeo’s regular range and is chiefly known for its distinctive styling, V6 character and focused rear-wheel-drive chassis.
