About Alfa Romeo Sprint
The Alfa Romeo Sprint was a compact four-seat coupé produced from 1976 to 1989. Introduced as the Alfasud Sprint, it used the Alfasud’s front-wheel-drive platform and flat-four engine layout, combined with a lower, sharper body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Production was centred at Alfa Romeo’s Pomigliano d’Arco plant near Naples.
The Sprint occupied the accessible end of Alfa Romeo’s sporting range, offering distinctive coupé styling and engaging road manners in a smaller, more practical package than the brand’s larger grand tourers. Its rear hatch and compact rear seats also provided useful everyday versatility.
Early cars used a 1.3-litre boxer engine, with 1.5-litre versions following. Sprint Veloce models gained twin-carburettor engines and stronger performance. A 1983 update introduced revised exterior trim, while the name was shortened to Alfa Romeo Sprint after the Alfasud saloon gave way to the Alfa 33. Quadrifoglio Verde versions led the later range, first with a 1.5-litre engine and subsequently a 1.7-litre unit.
The model is known for its wedge-shaped profile, low centre of gravity, responsive handling and characterful boxer engines. It represents Alfa Romeo’s ability to turn compact family-car engineering into an attainable sporting coupé.
