About Alfa Romeo Spider
The Alfa Romeo Spider is a two-seat roadster that served as the brand’s principal open-top sports car for several decades. It is best known for combining distinctive Italian styling with engaging handling and a compact, driver-focused layout. Across its generations, the Spider occupied a more specialised position than Alfa Romeo’s saloons and hatchbacks, acting as an image model within the range.
The original Spider debuted in 1966 and remained in production until 1994. Designed by Pininfarina and based on Alfa Romeo’s rear-wheel-drive 105/115-series platform, it was offered in four main series. The earliest version became widely known as the Duetto, although this was not its official production name. Later updates introduced a cut-off tail, revised bumpers, aerodynamic trim and a cleaner final-series appearance. Various four-cylinder engines and trim levels were offered, including Junior and Veloce models.
A completely redesigned Spider arrived in 1995 alongside the GTV coupé. This front-wheel-drive generation adopted sharper styling and was available with four-cylinder Twin Spark engines and V6 power in selected markets. In 2006, it was replaced by a larger, Brera-related two-seat roadster, offered with petrol and diesel engines; some versions used Alfa Romeo’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system. Production ended in 2010.
