About Alfa Romeo GTV
The Alfa Romeo GTV is a compact 2+2 sports coupé introduced in 1995 alongside the related two-seat Spider. Its name stands for Gran Turismo Veloce and revived a designation associated with earlier Alfa Romeo performance coupés. Developed with Pininfarina, the GTV was distinguished by a low profile, sharply cut rear bodywork and four individual headlights set beneath openings in the bonnet.
Known internally as the Type 916, this generation used front-wheel drive and a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension. Petrol engines varied by market and production phase, including 1.8- and 2.0-litre Twin Spark four-cylinders, a 2.0-litre turbocharged V6, and 3.0-litre V6 versions. A 2003 update brought revised front styling, a direct-injection 2.0 JTS engine and a 3.2-litre V6 flagship.
The GTV occupied a specialist position in Alfa Romeo’s range, offering more focused styling and handling than the brand’s saloons and hatchbacks while retaining occasional rear seats and hatchback access to the luggage area. Early cars were assembled at Alfa Romeo’s Arese plant; production later moved to Pininfarina. The model is particularly associated with distinctive Italian design, responsive chassis tuning and characterful Twin Spark and V6 engines.
