About Alfa Romeo F12

The Alfa Romeo F12 was a compact light commercial vehicle produced from 1967 to 1983. It replaced the final Romeo/Autotutto models and formed the van branch of a closely related range: “F” stood for furgone, or van, while the A12 was the corresponding light truck. The number indicated a nominal 12-quintal payload class.

Designed mainly for urban deliveries, trades and public-service work, the F12 used a forward-control body and front-wheel drive, providing a practical load area within a relatively short vehicle. The principal version was a panel van, but the platform also supported passenger, minibus, ambulance and other specialist bodies. Lighter F11 and A11 derivatives were available during the early production years.

Early F12 models used a 1.3-litre petrol engine related to Alfa Romeo’s Giulia twin-cam unit, creating an unusual engineering link with the brand’s passenger cars. A 1.8-litre Perkins diesel was added in the 1970s for operators seeking lower fuel use and commercial durability. A 1977 update introduced a black grille and revised exterior trim.

Within Alfa Romeo’s lineup, the F12 filled a practical role far removed from the marque’s better-known sporting saloons and coupés. It is now regarded as a distinctive and relatively scarce example of Alfa Romeo’s in-house commercial-vehicle production.
