About Alfa Romeo Arna
The Alfa Romeo Arna was a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback produced from 1983 to 1987. It resulted from a joint venture between Alfa Romeo and Nissan, with its name derived from Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli. The model was created to give Alfa Romeo a relatively affordable entry in the growing European family-hatchback market, positioned below the Alfasud.
Offered with three- or five-door bodywork, the Arna combined the basic structure and practical, angular design of the N12-generation Nissan Cherry/Pulsar with major Alfa Romeo mechanical components. Its flat-four petrol engines, transmission, steering, front brakes and front suspension were derived from the Alfasud, while Nissan supplied the body and rear suspension. Assembly took place in Italy after body panels were shipped from Japan.
Early versions included the three-door L and five-door SL with a 1.2-litre engine. Sportier Ti models added stronger performance and were available with larger flat-four engines, including 1.3- and 1.5-litre units. The Arna is best known for its unusual mix of Japanese body design and Italian engineering. It achieved limited commercial success and had a short production life, but its distinctive development story and relative rarity give it a notable place among Alfa Romeo’s compact cars of the 1980s.
