About Alfa Romeo Alfetta
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta was a rear-wheel-drive sports saloon introduced in 1972. Positioned between the Giulia and the larger Alfa Romeo 2000, it combined family-car practicality with engineering influenced by the brand’s competition experience. Its name recalled Alfa Romeo’s successful Alfetta Grand Prix cars.
The model is best known for its transaxle layout, with the clutch and gearbox mounted at the rear to improve weight distribution. A De Dion rear axle, inboard rear brakes and sophisticated front suspension contributed to balanced handling. This configuration later became central to several Alfa Romeo models, including the Giulietta, Alfa 90 and Alfa 75.
The four-door saloon was offered mainly with 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines. Turbo-diesel versions and market-specific trim levels broadened the range during its production life. The saloon remained in production until 1984.
A related two-door Alfetta GT arrived in 1974, with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro. It developed into the GTV range, including four-cylinder versions, the turbocharged GTV Turbodelta and the GTV6 with a 2.5-litre V6. The coupé family continued beyond the saloon and remained available into the mid-1980s.
The Alfetta is recognised as an important link between Alfa Romeo’s classic saloons and its later transaxle-era cars, valued for its distinctive styling, responsive engines and handling-focused chassis.
