About Alfa Romeo Alfasud
The Alfa Romeo Alfasud was a compact family car introduced in 1971, with production beginning in 1972 at the new Pomigliano d’Arco plant in southern Italy. It brought Alfa Romeo into a more accessible market segment and represented a major technical departure from the brand’s larger rear-wheel-drive models. Standard Alfasud production ended in 1984.
Its front-wheel-drive layout, horizontally opposed four-cylinder petrol engines and low centre of gravity helped give it responsive handling and strong road manners. Giorgetto Giugiaro’s fastback-style body combined compact dimensions with useful passenger space. Early cars had a separate boot, while three- and five-door hatchback versions appeared later. Engine capacities ranged from 1.2 to 1.5 litres in the main Alfasud line.
Important variations included the sportier two-door ti, the three-door Giardinetta estate and the Alfasud Sprint coupé. Higher-performance models included Veloce and Quadrifoglio Verde versions. The coupé dropped the Alfasud name in 1983 and continued as the Alfa Romeo Sprint until 1989.
The Alfasud is remembered for making Alfa Romeo’s distinctive engineering and engaging driving character available in a practical small car. Its reputation was weakened by corrosion and inconsistent early build quality, but well-preserved examples remain valued for their steering, balance and lively boxer engines.
