About Alfa Romeo 90
The Alfa Romeo 90 is a four-door executive saloon produced from 1984 to 1987 at the Arese factory in Italy. Styled by Bertone, it combined a more formal, angular body with mechanical components developed from the Alfetta. It occupied the upper part of Alfa Romeo’s range and served as a short-lived bridge between the brand’s established rear-wheel-drive models and the later 164.
Its front-engine, rear-transaxle layout placed the gearbox at the back, helping to distribute weight more evenly. De Dion rear suspension and responsive steering supported the balanced handling for which classic Alfa Romeo saloons are known. The design also featured an air-operated front spoiler that lowered at speed on selected versions.
The range varied by market and included 1.8- and 2.0-litre Twin Cam four-cylinder petrol engines, 2.0- and 2.5-litre V6 units, and a 2.4-litre VM Motori turbodiesel. The 2.0 V6 was particularly relevant in Italy, where taxation strongly favoured engines of no more than two litres. The 2.5 V6 Quadrifoglio Oro represented the most prestigious specification, combining the smooth Alfa V6 with additional equipment.
Known for its distinctive engineering, understated styling and comfortable cabin, the Alfa Romeo 90 was more conservative than many sporting Alfas. Its three-year production run and replacement by the front-wheel-drive 164 make it a relatively uncommon model from a transitional period in the company’s history.
