About Alfa Romeo 33
The Alfa Romeo 33 is a compact family car produced from 1983 to 1995. It replaced the Alfasud as Alfa Romeo’s entry in the European small-family segment and retained much of its predecessor’s mechanical layout, including front-wheel drive and horizontally opposed four-cylinder petrol engines. Built at Pomigliano d’Arco, it became one of the brand’s highest-volume models, with production approaching one million vehicles.
The core model was a five-door hatchback with a defined rear deck and full tailgate. A Pininfarina-developed estate arrived as the Giardinetta and was later renamed Sport Wagon. The range included 1.3-, 1.5- and 1.7-litre petrol versions, a three-cylinder turbodiesel and several four-wheel-drive derivatives. Later cars added fuel injection, catalytic converters and a 16-valve 1.7-litre boxer engine, while Permanent 4 and Q4 variants offered permanent all-wheel drive.
Known for its low-mounted boxer engines, light construction and responsive handling, the 33 offered a distinctive alternative to mainstream compact cars of its era. Practical body styles broadened Alfa Romeo’s appeal, while Quadrifoglio Verde and all-wheel-drive versions maintained the marque’s sporting character. A 1990 update aligned its appearance with contemporary Alfa models before the 145 and 146 took its place.
