About Alfa Romeo 164
The Alfa Romeo 164 is a four-door executive saloon produced at Arese, Italy, from 1987 to 1998. It served as Alfa Romeo’s flagship, replacing the 90 and Alfa 6 before giving way to the 166. Its sharp, aerodynamic body was styled by Pininfarina and gave the car a distinctive identity within the premium large-saloon market.
The 164 was developed as part of the Type Four programme, sharing its basic architecture with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000. However, it used unique exterior styling and Alfa Romeo-specific chassis and powertrain configurations. It was also an important departure for the brand, adopting front-wheel drive for a large Alfa Romeo production model.
Available versions varied by market and included four-cylinder Twin Spark petrol engines, turbocharged V6 units, the 3.0-litre V6 and a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered. Later Super models introduced updated styling and equipment, while performance-focused Quadrifoglio versions occupied the top of the range. The rare Q4 combined a 24-valve 3.0-litre V6 with four-wheel drive.
The 164 is particularly known for its angular Pininfarina design, spacious cabin and characterful V6 engines. It combined the comfort expected of an executive saloon with the responsive road manners traditionally associated with Alfa Romeo.
