About Alfa Romeo 156
The Alfa Romeo 156 was launched in 1997 as the brand’s medium-sized sports saloon and a central model in its late-1990s renewal. Positioned in Europe’s D-segment, it offered family-car usability with a stronger sporting emphasis than most mainstream alternatives. The 159 replaced it in Alfa Romeo’s core range in 2005.
Designed under Walter de Silva at Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile, the 156 is known for its distinctive proportions, prominent shield grille and concealed rear door handles, which give the four-door body a coupé-like appearance. It was named European Car of the Year for 1998 and became an important commercial success for the brand.
The range began with the saloon and expanded in 2000 with the Sportwagon estate. Petrol choices included Twin Spark four-cylinder units, the later JTS direct-injection engine and V6 models, while JTD diesels provided an economy-focused alternative. Manual, Selespeed automated manual and Q-System automatic transmissions were offered in selected versions and markets.
Notable derivatives included the 3.2-litre V6 GTA saloon and Sportwagon, as well as the raised Crosswagon Q4 and Sportwagon Q4 with permanent all-wheel drive. Across its range, the 156 is chiefly associated with expressive Italian styling, responsive handling and an unusually broad mix of practical, performance and diesel variants.
