About Alfa Romeo 155
The Alfa Romeo 155 is a four-door medium-size sports saloon produced from 1992 to 1997. Introduced as the successor to the rear-wheel-drive Alfa 75, it marked an important change in the brand’s model range. The 155 adopted a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout developed within the Fiat Group, while retaining Alfa Romeo-specific suspension tuning, steering, gearing and engines. It was replaced by the 156 in 1998.
The range included Twin Spark four-cylinder petrol engines, a 2.5-litre V6 and diesel options in selected markets. The notable 2.0 Turbo Q4 combined permanent all-wheel drive with technology related to the Lancia Delta Integrale. Most versions were front-wheel drive. A mid-1990s update introduced wider tracks, flared wheel arches and revised styling, creating the distinctive “wide-body” models.
Positioned as Alfa Romeo’s practical sporting saloon, the 155 offered angular wedge-shaped styling, a spacious cabin and a large luggage compartment. It is particularly associated with touring-car competition: racing derivatives won the 1992 Italian Superturismo title, the 1993 DTM championship and the 1994 British Touring Car Championship. These results gave the 155 a strong motorsport identity and helped establish it as one of the brand’s best-known 1990s saloons.
