About Alfa Romeo 147
The Alfa Romeo 147 is a compact hatchback introduced in 2000 and produced until 2010. It replaced the 145 and 146 and served as Alfa Romeo’s main offering in the upper part of the European compact-car segment before the Giulietta arrived. Built at Pomigliano d’Arco in Italy, it shared the brand’s early-2000s design direction with the larger 156 and was named European Car of the Year for 2001.
Offered with three or five doors, the 147 combined everyday hatchback practicality with a distinctly sporting character. The five-door model used concealed rear door handles to retain a coupé-like profile. A 2004 update revised the exterior and cabin while introducing additional equipment and updated diesel options.
The range varied by market and included Twin Spark petrol engines, JTD and later JTDM common-rail diesels, manual transmissions and the Selespeed automated manual. The standout derivative was the 147 GTA, launched in 2002 with a 3.2-litre V6, wider bodywork, upgraded brakes and revised suspension.
Within Alfa Romeo’s lineup, the 147 was positioned as a more style- and driver-focused alternative to mainstream compact hatchbacks. It is particularly known for its Italian styling, quick steering, composed handling and characterful engines, although specifications differ considerably by year, trim and market.
