About Alfa Romeo 146
The Alfa Romeo 146 is a compact five-door family hatchback introduced in 1995 and produced until 2000. It was developed alongside the three-door 145 as part of Alfa Romeo’s replacement for the 33. Within the range, the 146 offered the more practical body style, with easier rear-seat access, a spacious cabin and a useful luggage compartment. It was later replaced by the Alfa Romeo 147.
Designed for the European C-segment, the 146 combined everyday usability with the brand’s traditional emphasis on distinctive styling and engaging handling. Its shape featured a high roofline and a stepped rear profile, giving it a different character from the shorter, more overtly sporting 145. Both models shared their basic platform, front-wheel-drive layout and much of their mechanical specification.
Early versions used four-cylinder boxer petrol engines derived from the 33, alongside a 1.9-litre turbo diesel. The range was subsequently updated with 1.4-, 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-litre Twin Spark petrol engines, while the later 1.9 JTD introduced common-rail diesel technology. Variations included regular trim levels, the youth-oriented Junior and the sportier 2.0 ti.
The 146 is mainly known for balancing practicality with responsive steering, secure road manners and characterful engines. It represented Alfa Romeo’s more individual alternative to mainstream compact family cars of the late 1990s.
