About Acura TL
The Acura TL was a midsize premium sedan produced for the 1996 through 2014 model years. Introduced during Acura’s move toward alphanumeric model names, it became one of the brand’s core passenger cars and a successor to the Vigor. Across four generations, the TL combined luxury-oriented equipment with engineering shared with Honda models, while receiving distinct styling, interiors and chassis tuning.
Early versions used front-wheel drive and included both five-cylinder and V6 engines. Later generations were powered exclusively by V6 engines and offered increasingly advanced technology, safety features and higher-quality cabin materials. The range also included sport-focused Type-S versions, which added more power and firmer suspension tuning.
The fourth-generation TL was available with either front-wheel drive or Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. SH-AWD models were positioned as the more performance-oriented choice and could also be equipped with a manual transmission in certain model years, an uncommon feature among premium sedans of the period.
Within Acura’s lineup, the TL generally sat below the larger RL flagship and, after the TSX arrived, above that smaller sedan. It competed with entry-level and midsize luxury cars from Japanese, European and American brands. The TL is known for its strong V6 performance, spacious cabin, generous standard equipment and balance of comfort with responsive handling. It was replaced by the Acura TLX for the 2015 model year.
