About Acura SLX
The Acura SLX was a mid-size, truck-based SUV sold for the 1996–1999 model years in the United States. It was Acura’s first SUV, giving the brand an entry in the growing luxury sport-utility market before the MDX arrived. Developed with Isuzu and built in Japan, the SLX was closely related to the second-generation Isuzu Trooper, with Acura-specific trim, equipment and badging.
All versions used a four-door, five-seat body, four-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Early models had a 3.2-litre V6 producing 190 hp and were offered in base form or with a Premium package. Available upgrades included leather upholstery, heated power front seats and a power moonroof. For 1998, revised exterior styling and a redesigned dashboard accompanied a 3.5-litre DOHC V6 rated at 215 hp. The former Premium features became standard, while a Torque on Demand four-wheel-drive system improved everyday usability.
The SLX combined upscale equipment with traditional off-road hardware, including body-on-frame construction and low-range gearing. Its upright profile, rear-mounted spare wheel and split swing-out rear doors reflected its utility-focused origins. Short-lived but significant, it marked Acura’s transition from a mainly car-based range towards the broader SUV and crossover lineup that followed.
