About Acura RL
The Acura RL was the brand’s flagship luxury sedan for the 1996–2012 model years. It replaced the Acura Legend and was later succeeded by the RLX. Built in Japan and closely related to the Japanese-market Honda Legend, the RL served as Acura’s most refined four-door model, positioned above the brand’s other sedans.
Two generations were offered. The first-generation 3.5RL used a 3.5-litre V6 engine, front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Its priorities were a smooth ride, a quiet cabin and traditional luxury-car comfort rather than overtly sporting performance.
The redesigned 2005 RL adopted a more compact, technology-focused approach. Its defining feature was standard Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, which could distribute power between the rear wheels to improve cornering response and stability. Early versions used a 3.5-litre V6, while the 2009 update introduced a 3.7-litre V6 and revised styling. A six-speed automatic arrived for the final model years.
The RL was generally sold with a high level of standard equipment, while navigation, upgraded audio and driver-assistance technology varied by year and package. It is known for understated design, secure handling, strong V6 performance and an emphasis on engineering and cabin refinement.
