About Acura CL
The Acura CL is a front-wheel-drive, two-door premium coupe produced for the 1997–1999 and 2001–2003 model years. Developed mainly for North America and built in Ohio, it served as a more style-focused companion to Acura’s TL sedan. The CL occupied the middle of the brand’s range, combining four-seat practicality and comfort with a sportier profile than Acura’s sedans.
Two generations were offered. Early models came with 2.2- or 2.3-litre four-cylinder engines, while the 3.0CL used a V6. The redesigned second generation adopted a 3.2-litre V6 throughout the range and placed greater emphasis on performance and refinement.
The most notable version is the 3.2CL Type-S, introduced for 2001 with 260 horsepower, firmer suspension tuning, quicker steering and larger wheels. Most CLs used automatic transmissions, but the 2003 Type-S was also available with a close-ratio six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential.
The CL is known for its smooth V6 power, well-equipped cabin and balance of everyday usability and coupe styling. Within Acura’s period lineup, it represented a practical alternative to traditional European and Japanese luxury coupes while retaining the brand’s emphasis on engineering and value.
